The other day on Dear Author they talked about books featuring werewolves and whether or not readers preferred to read an entire series with werewolves or books that sometimes feature werewolves. I’ve written werewolves, vampires and panthers before but never in one world, at least not until I wrote my SCIONS series for Silhouette Nocturne. I had a lot of fun with this series and I really enjoyed writing stories featuring tortured alpha heroes and heroines strong enough to match them.
One thing I’ve always done with each of my books was create a hero spotlight. The only place you’ll find these spotlights is on my website, but I’ve added them below for fun. They show how the hero feels about the heroine–things he would think but would never say.
Scions: Resurrection
I was cast out and meant to die, but I was built to survive. Ruthless and resolute, I’ll do everything in my power to live another day, no matter the consequences. I live, because my clan needs someone to believe in the prophecy, to always look for the signs.
You’re human, of a race I heartily despise, yet your inner strength shines like a beacon, guiding me toward you. Your quick wit and your steadfast humanity achingly remind me what I want most, while your intoxicating smell makes me want to inhale your very essence.
You’re the most dangerous of forbidden fruit, constantly testing my ironfisted control, but I believe you are key to this eternal prophecy that echoes in my head.
You are…my salvation. ~ Jachin Black, Sanguinas
Scions: Insurrection
For almost two decades I’ve watched over you, protected you. I stayed in the shadows and always at a distance, which was hard for a man like me, a werewolf who has thought of you as one of his pack. Even if you were human. But when you grew up and my feelings for you started to change from protector to…something deeper, I distanced myself even more.
Now, a deadly turn of events has brought us together, and you stand in front of me, a grown, independent woman, determined and smart…and so very tempting. Perched on the edge of my primal world, you’re asking me questions. Dangerous questions. How am I supposed to keep my distance when your life might be at stake, when your sweet smell sets my inner wolf howling and clawing inside me to be free so that he can claim you for his very own?
My wolf’s much stronger this time around, more visceral in his wants and desires, but I’m damned determined to keep him reined in. We have a past, you and I…a past that I hope you’ll never discover or I’ll lose you forever. ~ Landon Rourke, Lupreda
Scions: Revelation
As a zerker destiny breathes its wild, out-of-control breath down my neck—you walk into my life and blow me away with your honest, forthright approach. Your confidence instantly draws me in, while your electric touch tests the limits of my control, making me curse the fates for stripping away my humanity. Yet, I’m not the only one who recognizes your precious value and suddenly your life is not your own. Danger lurks everywhere—on every face—forcing me to question my steadfast loyalty to my pack.
You are mine to protect. I will keep you safe, zerker reality be damned! ~ Caine Grennard, Lupreda
My SCIONS books are hard to get in print now (they’re still available in eBook format), so I’d like to give away all three books to one lucky winner on the Odd Shots blog. Hmmm, I think this is the first time I’ve given away the entire set.
Comment to enter and I’ll pick one random winner on Sunday, Oct. 4th at 12:00 pm EST.
Do you prefer to read about one species, ie…all vampires, all werewolves, etc? Or do you like your series to mix up the paranormal races? What paranormal race would you love to see in books, but haven’t seen much of yet?
Updated to say: I’m reading all your responses and really enjoying the diversity of what everyone is looking for. It’s much messier to pick a random winner by post number when my responses are part of the mix, so I’ll reply as part of the post where I announce the winner on Sunday. Keep them coming!
Patrice
I like a mix but I read anything if it holds my interest. Ghosts seems to be a very favorite with me but lately I have read vampires and werewolves and like them too. I am always open to try new genres and I like what I read about yours and hope to be entered for a chance to win this giveaway. I think I am ready to even open my mind a bit more. ha ha susan L.
I enjoy different types of books. Paranormal romance being my favorite.
i like a mixture of creatures in my books. i like the way the interspecies relashioships(wink) are so active(wink wink). also my different moods call for different creatures.
I like a mix but also when only one is in the story. Depends on the story. Vampires are the latest and I have been enjoying books about them. Mystery, intrige, and romance make very good reading but when your throw in vampires, ghosts and other creatures it puts a whammy on the story.
I really enjoy reading a series that mixes up paranormal races. I’d really enjoy seeing more interaction between different races like ghosts and other wares besides wolves and cats.
But I also love to read about individual races and their interactions because it’s so interesting to see the interactions.
Patrice, I haven’t gotten a chance to read your books yet (although I think that’s partially because I haven’t seen them around or I’m -blind-!) but reading the snippets you have make me amazed that I’ve missed them!
I love romance. Paranormal romance are awesome!
I love all types of paranormal romance. Werewolves, vampires, shape-shifters etc. they can all be in the same book or have separate series. I read them all. I love to read and I love the paranormal, and romance put them together and you have exciting reading material as far as I am concerned! I would like to see more shape-shifters in romance.
I like a mixture of paranormal species. Especially when love is suppose to be forbidden across species and the protaganists go thru hell in order to be together forever. A mixed shifter would be an unusual hero. ie. half wolf half tiger. An interesting idea.
I like a mix. What I would like to see more is Fae in books.
I prefer a mixture of supernaturals; some vampires, werewolves,a few witches and a gollum thrown in for cultural interest.
love the romance, supernatural. blood sucklings, ghosts, goblins, etc.
I love shifters. I’d take a man that can turn into a sexy beast [preferably a lion of leopard] any day! =] I would like to read more about banshees and things like that in a book.
I like to read a series with a mixture of paranormal races. I think each race has its strengths and weakness and can bring something different to the table.
My problem is trying to remember who is what race! I usually have to write it down….
Thanks!
I have to say that I love all things vampire and shifter. I enjoy books that have a little bit of everything. I would like to see more fae coming into books.
Thanks so much. I have just got started reading Silhouette Nocturne and I keep seeing all the books that I have missed out on. I dont have an ereader so I’m still using actual books. I cant believe it took me so long to drift over to the romance section in a bookstore. I have been missing some amazing stuff!!!
i love it if you mix fairies and normals
in a story. And even more if you add a little time travel mixed in
I don’t mind a mixture of paranormal beings. I enjoy all of them. I would like to see more of the fey kind.
What a great contest! I love tem all!
I like the paranormal race books.
Werefolks are so great!!!!
You have terrific contests.
I actually prefer both, but it depends on what the book is about and how it is written. I’ve read great paranormal books that concentrate on one race and others that are a mix. If the writing is consistent and believable then mixing up paranormal races is great. A couple of books I’ve stopped reading even though the plot and writing was great, but the characters/ races were so unbelievable, confusing, and hard to keep straight that I just couldn’t stand it anymore. When I have to write down who is what race and what that race can do/does makes the book too complicated.
I would love to read more books with witches, ghosts/spirits, fey/fairys, and shape shifters (not necessarily werewolves).
I like a mix. It keeps things interesting. I would love to see more familiars in books.
I like a mix also.
We see alot of vampires and werewolves nowadays, so anything additional would be interesting.
All types of supernaturals or otherworldly creatures are fine with me
I just recently read my first vampire books by J.R. Ward. I couldn’t put them down. Before this I wasn’t interested in them but now, I can’t wait to find the next good Vampire book. I will definitely have to look yours up.
