Staying on track

Happy new book release, Jill!

Ilona had a great post about New Year’s resolutions. I usually don’t do them, well, at least not consciously. I do have goals that I keep in mind throughout the year, but I don’t usually write them down.  For 2010, I am writing them down, but I’m also going one step further. I’m sharing them with a friend and she’s sharing hers with me. Together we’ll make sure we stay accountable. This is my way to guarantee I stay on track with my goals. A couple rules I’m going to implement.

1) Make my goals tough but doable so long as I stay focused.
2) Reward myself for reaching each goal.

If you make resolutions each year, what are some methods you’ve used to keep yourself on track throughout the year?

I don’t really every hold my self accountable to my resolutions. Maybe that is why about 2 weeks into the new year, I’ve lost interest and don’t do them. However, I would like to recount a story of a friend my husband made this year. This guy has a goal or two each year. He takes these very seriously. Last year it was to learn the piano and a foreign language. He now speaks french and took a year’s worth of piano lessons. He has a 7 year old son, and this year they are learning a marial art together, and building a shed together. He has joined my husband’s Tae Kwon Do, and already has the ground dug up and ready for the foundation to be poured. In the middle of winter! He’s crazy inspiring. He just wants to show his son it is possible to do anything, and to be a more cultural person. Hopefully this will inspire you too!

  2. In the middle of winter? That IS inspiring. Good for him for giving his son a great role model!

  3. Wish I did work at resolutions, but I don’t. I know there are some cute widgets available to keep track of just about anything.

Maybe we don’t need resolutions so much as to look up from the “stuff” that occupies so much time every day. Take a breath, look around us, and plot a course for the rest of the year.

I don’t make any resolutions any more, it was more depressing when I broke them.
