Since it’s getting to the end of 2009 and lists are everywhere, I thought I’d do one of my own.
So, here are 5 things I learned in 2009
1. I love frozen blueberries (why did I not know this before?!)
2. Jill (Myles) is a funny woman (even when she’s taking her life into her hands and mocking those who should not be mocked and will one day serve up a cold, cold revenge).
3. I love the Scottish Highlands. This is one place I definitely want to visit again.
4. Velour pants <- I cannot lie. They’re soft and comfy and perfect writerly wear at the desk.
5. Being “odd” has never been so much fun!
And if you’re wondering about the photo, I took it at a gorgeous little hotel we stayed at in Scotland. I thought he fit the theme of this blog very well, especially coming up to New Year’s (well, soon)
Okay, you know what I’m going to say–what are some of the things you’ve learned this year?
Velour Pants??? You *own* velour pants and . . . AND admit on national t’Internet to wearing them? Someone keep Nalini occupied whilst I call an ambulance! Lol!
I bought them in the U.K.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in New Zealand shops.
5 things….
1. Life is short. Ha. My dad always rolls his eyes when I say that but this year the proof has slapped me in the face more than once and I just sat there and went “I need to get this ball rolling!”
2. What I want. I actually figured what I want out of life. Everything. Not that it all might happen but there is never any harm having goal’s.
3. No news… is actually bad news. I need to learn the art of patient’s
4. I’m a workaholic. But only in writing
5. And most importantly (drum roll) To have faith. In myself and In life. I believe in fate. I need to stop worrying so much lol
#2 <- I agree totally.
I would never mock! It’s my psychologically-bizarre way of showing affection.
I believe you
1. I like to exercise. But only the right exercise. Growing up as a fat kid, this was a total shocker.
2. Projects at work can actually be completed. I work for a company now where although things might not get done on time, they at least get done. And that’s something!
3. Small bites of the elephant. Just start – don’t let the size of the task stop you.
3# <- I like that saying.
Hmm.. things I’ve learned..
1) No matter how bad things are, they can ALWAYS be worse.
2)Putting action into words. Simple to learn, harder to do, even harder to continue to do.
3) Be grateful for what I have.
4)Keep going when you want to give up, more so even.
Sounds like it’s been a tough year. Hope things are better in 2010.
I learned this year that EVERYTHING can get worst. But then, the best can come from the worst…
Jacinthe – I hope the best continues
1 get contact info for everyone in the group
2 make your own powerpoint and bring a copy to the presentation
3 take pictures of EVERYTHING
4 rescued animals who’ve lived on their own for a while make VERY grateful pets
5 10 hrs of graduate credit is really pushing it when you have other obligations (like working to pay for tuition, rent, food…books)
=A
I feel there is a story behind the presentation…
5 <– Amen! It's amazing how graduate work is both easier and much, MUCH harder at the same time. Not to mention that having a 'grown-up' life just doesn't leave a lot of room for the kind of focus you need to do school right.
What I learned in 2009? Oh crap, no one said there’d be a test!
Pop Quiz!
Three things I learned this year.
1. Certain authors, without fail, always make me break my book budget and have me inspect my bookshelves in hopes that I can cram one more book on it. (The books are always worth it though.)
2. The meaning of ‘blood is thicker than water’.
3. Buddhist monks, or at least the ones I met at Haeinsa, have no qualms about throwing an innocent bystander into a freezing mountain stream.
So true about the books! And I want to hear that story about the monks!
I attended a Temple Stay when I was in Korea for several days.
One afternoon, the monks in charge of us took us to the stream, told us we were allowed to talk (we were under a no talking rule) and fed us watermelon. I was washing my shoes when one monk decided to splash me, and that escaladed into a waterfight. Everyone ended up getting soaked, so the monks figured that dropping a few of us into the stream wouldn’t hurt.
My stay forever changed my perspective on monks. The head monk was also amazingly scarcastic, so it was unfortunate I only understood about a third of everything he said.
5 things I’ve discovered during 2009
1. Despite 2 trips to the UK in the last 2 years there is still so much there that I want to see.
2. No matter how bad things get, there really is light at the end of the tunnel
3. 43 is not too old to quit my job and apply for university. Time waits for noone and it’s time I got my butt in gear and actually did things I wanted to do, instead of doing what everyone else wants me to do, before I’m too old to do them.
4. backing up data on your PC is really important (having had a desktop die on me and a laptop stolen I should already have learnt this lesson several years ago but it really sunk in this year after I almost lost the majority of my holiday photos when my netbook died on me)
5. The YouTube video of Surprised Kitty will brighten my day every time I watch it!
Nalini .. velour pants! Do you mean like lounge pants? Sussan usually have some s lounging suits – pants and top. Haven’t been there for a while so they may no longer be selling them.
Shellbell – I don’t think they’re the same. Velour is really soft and sort of velvety material.
Yep, have definitely seen some velour at Sussan in the past.
My velour tracksuit is my most comfy outfit (other than my PJs at nighttime); I wear it a lot on the weekends….
Ok, things I learned….
1. Hard work & having a perfect gpa will not get you a decent teaching job in the state of Missouri. :-/ It’s all whom you know, not what you know. Ugh.
2. On a more positive note, I’m grateful for having two loving parents who have let me live with them while looking for said job.
3. The BBC makes awesome movies (ie North & South, ect.)!
I bought North and South on DVD so I could watch it over and over again
Velour pants Nalini
Hmmm…I can’t talk as I discovered how much I love my Eskimo dance warm-ups:
http://www.dancedirect.com/uk/Category/Ballet/Warm-ups/
(They are the ones at the bottom of the page.)
No matter how bad things are, they can ALWAYS be worse.
(((Readsalot))) I too haven’t had a good year. You’d think after 4 years of bad years I’d not expect more, but what can I say I live in hope
I’ve also learnt that…your upbringing can really affect who you are, but it’s never to late to start on the path to changing…even if it seems like it’s too late. And yes, sometimes the path seems long, but I’m hoping it will be worth it.
In the same vein, I’ve learnt (unfortuantely) that family can be a nightmare…so it’s up to me to try and carve a life for myself independent of them, before it’s too late.
I know I sound negative, but I feel more positive. I know I have to go forward or go nowhere…and I’d want…I need to keep walking

Nalini, have you tried grapes soaked in champagne, frozen and then rolled in sugar? YUM!! Had this at a party once. The hostess had arranged the grapes in a pyramid-style tower as a center piece on the food table. It was all sparkly and delicious!
In general, plain frozen grapes are also wonderful summertime snack.
Here’s a recipe I found on-line that looked similar.
http://www.purcellsisters.com/hors-doeuvres-recipes/light-appetizer-recipes/champagne-marinated-grapes
I tasted frozen grapes in Japan. Delish!
That recipe sounds yummy!
I love velours pants and asked for some for Christmas, they’re great when you’re hanging out reading your emails and your books and make you feel relaxed.
I’ve never been to Ireland but my maternal grandmother was Irish and so I’m sure I would love it.
I feel wonderful about trying new authors when they have been recommended by authors I already love.
My favorite authors must write faster.
Ireland is so lovely. I really enjoyed visiting.
Things I learned in 2009:
1. When your couple friends are having relationship problems, STAY AWAY!
2. I will never have enough money to buy all the books I want.
3. I still have no idea what I want to do with my life.
4. Friends are hard to come by, but when you find one or two who truly suit you, hold on to them tight.
5. Life often throws me a curve ball, I’m just really excited that I am still in the game.
#4 <– so true.
1. never give up!
2. I’m a procrastinator but I get a job done.
3. never give up!
It’s just that important a lesson
I agree with the never giving up
What are the 5 things I have learned?
1. Sometimes being patient does pay off.
2. Doing the right thing isn’t always the right thing to do.
3. Ask for help when you need it.
4. I have the bestest friends ever.
and
5. Smile sometimes it is the only thing you can do.
Things I have learned 2009:
1) That my brother Erik will always find a way to spoof me (Not only on April 1st).
2) If one of my clients starts to go rough/to threaten me, i`ll call earlier for help. (Not everybody is as good as I want to believe).
3) That I can`t stop to laugh about myself. (Sometimes it would suit me more, if I would be a bit scared).
4) To keep my dreams. (Even if they are not rechable. Not everything has to become true).
5) That I have a weakness for soy sauce.
I learned very important lessons about myself this year:
1.) To be a girly girl can be quite fun with the right people.
2. I can actually leave the country and not die of homesickness!
3. Bath/UK is beautiful!
4. To skip classes can be good for the soul:-)
5. And that english sausages are really, really not food I want to eat again!
Yes, I`ve to agree with you.
But chips with salt and vinegar taste good:-).
Things I have learned this year:
1) There are nice people out there who are willing to help you with medical, even if you don’t have insurance and you dont’ have to sell you motorcycle to do it.
2) Hicks drive me nuts and it’s great to get away where there are none!
3) Dressing in something besides t-shirt and jeans and wearing make-up is not a crime. Ok, being sexy is not a crime.
4) Never give up on your dreams no matter what happens!
5) There are great guys out there! You just have to look hard to find them and never settle for less than the best with them!
What I learned in 2009:
1. That Although she might not always be there on a emotional level, my mom loves me and will let me live home rent free for as long I need too.
2. I cannot CAN NOT live with my mother for the rest of my life even if it is rent free.
3. I like to cook.
4. I use my mild learning disability as a front not to do things I’m scared of failing at. If I can read a 300 page book in 2 days I can learn to fill out medical form and balance a check book.
5. That although I live in one of the best and diverse cities in the world I am extremely sheltered. As in,”What do you mean there isn’t a Starbucks within 2 blocks of your house?”
Things I plan to learn in 2010
1. Cross stitch
2. How to balance a check book (if there is time after cross stitch)
Um, things. Learned. Mostly a little about sensitivity. My son is now 12 and I spend a good bit of time around him and his friends. My husband is in the dreaded 50’s.
1. Be kind.
2. Simple acceptance is a great gift that you can give.
3. Be encouraging.
4. Accept the things you cannot change with grace, and keep working on the rest. 5. You don’t have to solve everything in one day.
6. Expect the best from people, even if you’ve been disappointed a lot. Don’t give up on them.
7. Life is short. No one can do everything they would like to do, but do what is in your power.
Mine are simple. Put together a puzzle. Be adventurous with hair color. Feed geese. Hunt fossils. Go wading. Make the day count!
