Okay, confession: sometimes I get books and I don’t read them.
I KNOW, I KNOW.
But my TBR pile? Out of control, yet I can’t stop buying. That’s okay, too! Owning is half the pleasure, right? Patrice’s post yesterday made me think of what I’ve read and enjoyed lately.
Well, at RWA in San Francisco, I got a copy of a book from a newish author who’d just had her first single title released under her own name — Larissa Ione. I told her how much I wanted to read her book (mostly because it was pretty!) and she thanked me and signed a copy for me, and I went home with it tucked into my suitcase. When I unpacked, I placed it in the TBR pile triumphantly. I’d read that one ASAP! Woot! Paranormal!
Erm. Flash forward about two years. I’ve been in a reading slump and discarding books left and right, all half-finished. There’s a few brand new YA books lingering, uncracked, on my night stand. I’m in the mood for paranormal, and nothing is soothing the urge. So I dig through the old TBR pile of yesteryear. And find Larissa Ione’s book.
Now, I admit…I am not a fan of medical romances. So I nearly put the book aside. DEMON HOSPITAL NOOOOOOOO. But Larissa has a very readable, great style to her writing. So I keep reading. And reading. And reading. And sex happens, and it’s woah-hot. And action. And more sex. And then I can’t put the book down. There’s demons and betrayal and hot sex and a guy that has to find his mate before he turns to the dark side and WOOT. This is just what I’ve been waiting for!
I finished this book tonight and it was AWESOME. Even though I got this one free, I’m going to run out to the store tomorrow and buy the next two in the series, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 4th one that comes out at the end of this month. Good stuff! I have a new author to glom.
(If you haven’t read this series, it reminds me of the darkness of the Black Dagger Brotherhood mixed with the crazy worldbuilding and sexiness of a Kresley Cole novel. Uh, I know. Total win, right?)
What have you read lately that was full of win? And what did you think of this series?
I am currently reading Joss Ware’s first Envy book, Beyond the Night. I can already tell I’m going to be obsessed with this series.
I *love* Larissa’s series. It’s smart and well imagined. Plus, the sexin’? It’s HAWT! And it has a million possibilities (ehem…the series, although the sexin’ does too).
I have that Joss Ware book! You’ll have to tell me how you like it!
I keep hearing about the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I really need to grab it. It is officially now in my mental TBR pile.
“And sex happens, and it’s woah-hot. And action. And more sex. And then I can’t put the book down. There’s demons and betrayal and hot sex and a guy that has to find his mate before he turns to the dark side and WOOT.”
And if that isn’t the best way to promote a book, I don’t know what is!
I think you’ll be happy! It was very sexy.
Larissa told me she named a character after me in this series. To which I replied, “Cool, I hope I don’t die.”
Her “Er, well…” response was deafening. LOL!
Oh no! LOL. Now I’ll be on the lookout for you.
I really enjoy this series and recently completed my re-read so I am prepared for Book 4
.
I’m reading fast so I can be ready for book 4!
Loved it. I came across this series about a month ago and read all three promptly…eagerly awaiting the fourth.
Love this series. Was supposed to get an ARC of Book 4 that “got lost in the mail” – NOT the author’s fault. Am only a little bitter. Little. Bit.
New series that I’m pimping hard (with no connection to the author, promise – it’s just awesome) is by DB Reynolds. “Vampires in America”. The first two are Raphael and Jabril, and the third is Rajmund, but it’s not out yet.
You can get them ebook or paperbook and they rock. The heroine of the first two is a private investigator and the vampire angle is different enough that it’s not same old. The sex is HAWT (in case anyone cares). I like.
Have a few more if I get more time to, ahem, BWW (blog while working).
Oh no
Well, you only have a few more days to wait, at least!
I keep buying books and then not reading them. And seriously, the pile keeps getting bigger and bigger. And now, I’ll have to give this series a go, since it’s being pushed so eloquently.
There’s this new author, Jill Myles, have you heard of her? She writes some excellent stuff. And the 2nd book is just right around the corner.
What’s with the name Kelly these days? I also have 3 days to dead by Kelly Meding and the Better part of Darkness by Kelly Gay. Both have great potential to turn into a running series, so there’s that. Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series is also turning out to be most excellent.
Oooh…I’m super committed to all of the above. (Amazon was pushing them, I complied…for once, they did something good.) Just finished the second Yellowrock book yesterday.
I hear that Jill is pretty good!
Ha! And I can’t wait to read the books by both Kellys.
Love Larissa’s Demonica series — seriously awesome sauce!
Just discovered Lili St.Crow’s Strange Angels series — bought the first 2 for my daughter but she’s staying with her grandparents for a week so I got in first *evil grin*
Reading a lot of paranormal YA at the mo — probably because daughter gets them from the library and I snag them to read before they’re due to be returned, LOL.
I enjoy YA paranormal too, but I have to be in a mood for YA. I might go months without reading one, and then I’ll read nothing but YA for weeks and weeks on end.
I totally understand the “collecting” disease. I keep a list of my favorite author’s books in my purse; this includes some authors who’ve been around for a while so they have a pretty extensive back list, or author’s whose books I’ve just started reading. Then when I happen to be near the Half Price Book store in my neighborhood, I pop in and check the book shelf. I justify the purchase of books because they might not be on the shelf later. As a result, I have books that will take me into my retirement years!
I received Meljean Brook’s Guardian series for Christmas, so I have been reading her books non-stop. I also read the first of Jeaniene Frost’s Cat and Bones/Night Huntress books before Christmas and I can’t wait to get back to that book series. However, before that happens, Nalini Singh has an Angel’s Guild book, Pat Briggs has a Mercy Thompson book, Alyssa Day has a Warriors of Poseidon book, and Eileen Wilkes has a Worlds of the Lupi story coming out; all in February!
Gosh, why does work have to take precedence over reading….;)
Sounds like a lot of good reading coming up to me!
There’s something to be said about getting into a series late … you feel bad for not reading it right away, but then when you finally get around to it (and love it!) the next books are readily available. You don’t have to wait months (or years) for them to come out!
I cannot buuy a book and not read it immediately. If I do not have the time to read it, my husband usually hides it where I am to short to go.
LOL – I think I’d be so mad at my husband if he hid my books!
Actually I just finished YOUR book today. Couldn’t. Put. It. Down. I have to save my review til the blog tour on the 25th. *snicker* I’m SO buying the next one. You rock. Okay, I’m done kissing butt:) I need to buy the first Demonica book because I feel so left out of the goodness. I think you finally sold me though with your description. Black Dagger Brotherhood mixed with Kresley Cole? *wipes sweat off forehead* Yeah, I’m heading to Amazon now!
Aw, thank you!! The next one is already appearing in stores, I am hearing.
And yes! I think Larissa’s stuff is right up there with Kresley’s and the BDB. I think you will like it!!
you’re looking at the queen of “buying books but not reading them” and i agree that owning is half the fun but it has to stop (that’s why i gave myself personal challenge/new years resolution: either no book buying until april OR read 20 of the books i already own).
anyway, i love larissa’s demonica series. i’ve read all three when i discovered them earlier last last in quick succession and i’m eagerly waiting for book 4 as well (i pre-ordered before i gave myself my challege so **whew**)
Holy crap! OMG…doing all kinds of squeeing here!
A reader told me I had to stop by, and I’m so glad I did!
Glad you liked Pleasure Unbound, Jill! What’s so funny is that just last night I turned in an interview with a review blogger, and I mentioned that I’d just started glomming you! <–mutual love-fest
Anyway, thanks so much for posting about PU! And thanks to everyone who has also read and enjoyed the books enough to order Ecstasy Unveiled! Hope you love it!
Dawn, what happened with the ARC? Was GCP supposed to send it to you? Can I do anything?
Oh, lol! That is hilarious! And I loved your book – I started #2 last night. You have such a dark and creative world and the sexy is intense. Love it! I’ve been yakking to everyone this week about your books. I’m so glad you stopped by!
The Demonica series are ACE!!!
I love everything about then and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment coming this month!!!!!!
I got just got six books in the mail this week.
I finished Jill’s Gentlemen prefer Succubi last night and I loved it!! Can’t wait for the next one.
I also like Yasmine Galenorn’s OW series.
Faith Hunter’s Jane Yellowrock series is awesome.
I had a friend intro me to Lilith Saintcrow. I put these in my “Not a romance but straight paranormal/UF” catagory. So far, the two series by her I have read are dark, in the “bad things happening to good people” way (like favorite secondary character X died, and is not coming back).
