(This contest is now closed!)
All right, kids, I enjoyed last week’s contest so much that I thought I’d do a repeat – but I’d shill another Odd Shots girl. This goes out to all the Meljean Brook fans (or the ones that haven’t tried Meljean’s stuff yet!). Because I am ridiculously excited for DEMON BLOOD in July, I am going through and re-reading some of Meljean’s backlist in my spare time.
(Well. I don’t have a lot of spare time, so it’s mostly re-reading favorite scenes and stuff.)
I have to admit, I have a serious girlcrush on Meljean’s writing. She writes the seriesĀ I wish I could – dark but tinged with humor, sexy, strong, and SEXY ANGELS AND FRIGGIN SEXY VAMPIRES. Ahem. I am a big fan. And Meljean is my favorite redhead, and always has time for my weepy, frantic emails when I am convinced (for the jillionth time) that my current work-in-progress is somehow the worst book ever. She’s a good shoulder to cry on.
And…I thought since we’re trying out Odd Shots books, why not give away one of Meljean’s books? If you haven’t tried her stuff, now’s a great time to get on board.
I’m giving away a copy of either DEMON ANGEL (if you haven’t read the series) or DEMON FORGED (if you need to catch up on the series). You can read either one without reading the whole series, of course — you just get more out of it if you do. If you read a lot of UF, I do think you’ll enjoy Meljean’s stuff.
To win…here’s what you’ve got to do. You have to tell me what your Guardian power is. See, the ‘angels’ in Meljean’s series are called Guardians and they each have a power — think of X-men with wings. Each Guardian has a power that had something to do with their previous life. Irena was a slave in life, so as a Guardian, she can manipulate metal – so no chains can ever hold her again. Drifter was a cowboy that ended his mortal life in jail…and as a Guardian, he holds power over locks. He can unlock anything.
My Guardian power would be…the ability to create my own instant socks. I think this stems from both my laziness at doing laundry, and the fact that touching wet cotton makes me shudder (my skin is crawling just thinking about it). Not an epic Guardian power, but I would be popular on laundry day.
There you go – now comment with your Guardian power and be entered to win. I’m giving away two books (shipped from Book Depository, so if it can be shipped to you, you can enter) to two random commenters and you must enter by NEXT THURSDAY (March 4th) at Midnight. I’ll announce the winners that morning.
Good luck! Let the funny fly!
My super power would have to be the ability to walk into a room and have it instantly be vacuumed and dusted. This power stems from the dog hair and dust rhinos in my house due to my extreme dislike for a vacuum cleaner and dustrag.
Okay, there is a metric ton of cat hair in my house, so I would approve of this super power (as long as you dropped by to do my house too!)
Deal!!!!
Ohmigosh, yes! I just vacuumed the downstairs AKA the cat’s playground for the first time since autumn and had to unclog the vacuum a dozen times. No, I am not exaggerating. And no, I do not have a million cats, only three. I nearly filled an entire regular-sized trashbag.
My Guardian power would be the power to meld into the background like a chameleon.
I haven’t read any of this series but would love to!
Thanks!
Jase

I wouldn’t mind that power myself! would come in handy at the dayjob.
Oh, I think my guardian power would be having 8 arms. One to hold my book, one to be loading the dishwasher, two to change the baby’s diaper, one to pick up my oldest son up off the dirt and brush off his scraped knee, two to hold my daughter and her babydoll while I read to her, and the last one to wave and blow kisses at my husband who is always on the go. Yep, I think that adds up to eight.
Haha! Combine that with the power of having more than 24 hours in a day (which I totally want, now that I think about it) and you would be UNSTOPPABLE!
I would have the power to taste a food and instantly know how to cook it and be able to make it perfectly. Because that is totally how I cook currently. Totally.
Oooh, that’s a good idea. I wouldn’t mind the super power of just being able to cook something other than spaghetti. Cause I hate spaghetti.
My power would be the ability to either teleport or move really really fast because it always seems like I waste so much time just getting from place to place!!!
I haven’t read these yet and I really really want to!!!
Thanks!!!!!
And think of all the traffic you could skip! I am on board with this.
Hmmm…probably a farmer in a previous life, so I’d have the ability to reach into my pocket and pull out food.
(Which works out well, because I like to eat!)
Great contest, I’d love to try these books!
Haha! But what if you were a…beet farmer? Then all you would have is an endless supply of beets. Ick.
My guardian power would be to manipulate air – so I can make air couches to sit on – since in my previous life I was a couch potato
Thanks for the contest!
Darn, this is a better power than what I thought of!
My ability would be to put people to sleep. Insomnia and I are close friends.
Thanks for the contest.
Oooh, not a bad idea. My husband would probably like that power!
My guardian power would be to have clean clothes all the time.
Some how I missed that skill in girly-girl-hood class. I went to a “do” a month ago and out of all the chairs… mine had gum on it… all down the back of my dress..
Oh, nasty! Someone else’s gum? That’s the worst. Ugh.
I don’t suppose being able to eat anything I liked without gaining weight could be considered a guardian quality? No? Alas.
Okay, then. I would have the ability to make fat-free, sugar-free, cholesterol-free foods delicious, filling, healthy and safe to eat.
Man, I sure wish that was a power. I’d be all about that.
My power would be to be able to manipulate ice and snow. That way I would never have to worry about shoveling snow again and would always have an cold drink in the summer.
And you’d never have to drive on black ice! (I stay home if there’s even a sniff of ice on the roads)
My guardian power would be to be a super page flipper, be able to read at a incredible pace, learn everything that can be learnt and aborb everything I read in record breaking time. This would stem from the fact that due to every day life reading is hard to get to and when I do Im so impatient that I almost die from sheer anticaption,:{ (now you have to admit some of those pages Im flippin awfully fast, … if you are a meljean brook reader … hehe ) and I cant wait till the end. But saying this it would certainly help out savi in lots of situatuons,
SUPER PAGE FLIPPER ..
What about the super power to read all the endings first? I admit I already have that power
Seeing as how I’m in the middle of a plumbing fiasco at home, my power would be to be able to fix things. I would be able to fix anything broken (arms/legs, electronics, automobiles, buildings, etc.) If it can be broken, I can fix it!
I would DEFINITELY take that power. Nothing is more irritating when there are things broken at home. :/
My guardian power would be to manipulate fire since I am stuck in a place surrounded by snow. Soo cold.
especially now that the darn groundhog saw his shadow! 6 more weeks of winter.
My Guardian power… would have to be knowledge of the truth beyond skin and words. I could sow the beginnings of healing the heart, mind and body through understanding at times then.
Aw! That’s an awesome power to have! Much better than my sock one.
Haha! Thanks! I was trying to think of something deep and voila!
I Have Not Read This Series But Just Reading The Little Tidbits About Guardian Powers Makes Me Very Curious About Them. Demon Angel Sounds Like A Good Start To Me. My Guardian Power Would Be The Ability To Control The Seasons. I Hate The Cold And Sometimes It Can Get Way To Hot So It Would Be Kool To Have Control Over Something Like That. Another Good Guardian Power Would Be To Have Control Of The Five Elements Earth, Air, Fire, Water, And Spirit.
If you haven’t read the series, I think you will like it! (and the five elements would be a badass power indeed)
Since Guardians don’t sleep (which trait would be convenient though I admit I’d miss it) my power would be to be in two places at one time so I can get everything done and still have a little time for leisure activities (and all the books I’m behind in).
I am impatiently awaiting ‘Demon Blood’, so you needn’t include me in the contest.
Two places at the same time is an EXCELLENT idea. (though that just made me think of Watchmen…)
My super power would have to do with my cooking. Anyone who ate food fixed by me would be in my control if I so desired.
alterlisa AT yahoo DOT com
But what would you do with all of them in your control? That is the question.
My Guardian power would be…the power to control the weather. Then I could have perfect days when I want or ugly days when that suits me. And if you piss me off…well hurricane Danielle’s a comin’
Ha! Your friends would be afraid of you if it was overcast outside.
Jill: I am with you on the Guardian Series! I LOVE Meljean’s storytelling. Her books are so emotionally rewarding. I could go on and on… But that’s not what today’s post is for!
My Guardian ability would revolve around either taking care of kids or using Twitter! Maybe the ability to calm all those around me.
Quilly: Guardians can eat whatever they want without gaining weight. They don’t need to eat and they can shapeshift.
Calming people is a good power. We’d send you over to some of the hockey games on the olympics, hehe
My power would be an instant mute button. I would love to command quiet time–whenever I want.
Children and husband beware!
Now THAT is an excellent idea!
I think my Guardian power would be invisibility. I have 4 kids and sometimes it would be good to sneak away and have some alone time. So when I hear “Mom?” I can go invisible and just sneak into the bathroom or something. lol
Haha!
I think my ability would be to be able to read a text book, and understand it and remember it. Because I’m currently a college student, and having someone who knows alot of random stuff is useful, right?
Like a mental Kindle? That could be fun…
I would like to have Irene’s power to manipulate metal because I like sharp shiney things and I could make some awesome blades with that power. And of course, be able to use them to kick major ass.
Irena was pretty darn awesome, wasn’t she?
My guardian power would be to be able to go into a room and unclutter it…like an instant organizer…my house is on the verge of looking like a hoarders home and I don’t have time to organize it
right now my dining room table looks like a hurricane hit it’s filled with bills and calculators (trying to get my taxes ready so I have to add up all my bills cus hubby is self employed) so being a super powered organizer, where all I have to do is close my eyes and Waaalllaa would be FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC right now!!!
Okay, I don’t really need another book TBR, but I can’t resist this x-men power thing.
I’ve always wanted to be able to pause time while I get something done, like reading or studying, then start it up again when I’m finished. I’m not cut out for the fast pace of modern life.
Oh, sweet. Never read these books before. Let’s see, my Guardian power would be to travel to the past through photographs. Haha, I sorta am in love with history.
On the one hand I wouldn’t mind teleportation and save on the travel time, but I also wouldn’t object to an elemental power or even be able to communicate with animals…I dunno, I just can’t pick ONE!
Mine would be to teleport. All the things I could do and books I could read with those extra hours in the day saved from traveling.
Well as a (hopefully) future archaeologist, my uber power would be to be able to touch a man made object and instantly know when and where it was made, what it was used for, what culture made it and how it was made.
Haven’t had a chance to read any of Meljean’s books yet, always seem to get side tracked in the book store
My super power would be to look at moss and weeds and they would just be gone and the plants would bloom and be healthy. As you can tell I have a black thumb
Hmmmm.. I’ve had this idea in my head a long while and I’m playing with it while writing. My super power would be the ability to manipulate algorithms. Traffic lights anyone? Green lights all the way baby.
My super power would be the ability to “fix, correct, repair, heal, make new” with the touch of my hand. This includes rubbing a hand over my face and through my hair first thing in the morning so that I don’t scare myself in the mirror! HAH!
the most recent Brook title I read was the novella in ‘Must Love Hellhounds’, which was EXCELLENT, so I’d want to usurp that power (to be able to ‘look’ out the eyes of nearby people/animals). My sideline power would be precognition of when an infant/toddler/child is about to come down with teething pain/stomach virus/flu so I can have the medications and papertowels locked an loaded ahead of time, and possibly get in a pre-emptive nap.
Hmmm. I believe my Guardian power would be to remember everything I read since I’m a librarian.
I haven’t read this series yet, but I’m intrigued.
Since I’m a grad student studying to be a speech therapist, this could go one of two ways:
1. Stop time because I never seem to have enough of it.
2. be able to understand whatever anybody says, no matter what language, no matter if their tongue is cut out, no matter if half their brain is missing. Come to think of it…that would probably be a telepath, huh? But an omnilingual telepath. Let’s go with that.
i would know exactly what is going to happen 5 minutes before it does, so i can
1, think up really witty retorts
2, be really amazing at quizzez AND
3, never again have to face the humility of the “think fast!”/promptly gets hit in the face thing. seriously, that is not funny.
I would have the power to either stop time for a few seconds at a time (to avoid those hilariously horrible foot-in-mouth moments) or teleportation, because i always seem to be doing things or going places really quickly. I would love demon forged, please!
I would have the power to either stop time for a few seconds at a time (to avoid those hilariously horrible foot-in-mouth moments) or teleportation, because i always seem to be doing things or going places really quickly. I would love demon forged, please! Man, i would love to have tons of superpowers! These topics are cool!
Since I’m kinda nerdy (I was a total band geek in HS), I would want my Guardian power to be super dazling looks that can en-thrall anyone into serving my whims! :::wink wink:::
OOOOhh a thought, to be able to read into the future…
Will I have to buy demon forged or am I gunna win it
hehe.. The power of manipulation, be able to win all the fab contests and know in advance, be able to make people wim to my every want need and desires !!!!! ohhhhh If Only…
if i had a power it would be the ability to know how anything was made just by loking at it cause i make lots of things. i sew, make jewlery, my own book shelves, a pan flute from pvc pipe (physics class). i could deasemble and reasemble anything.
I’d love to be able to communicate (‘talk’) to animals. What wonderful spies they would make!
My special power – the ability to turn books invisible to others – this would mean I could prop one up under my computer screen at work and read with no one the wiser (an evil power I know).
I haven’t read this series but I’d love to give it a try – I loved Melean’s short in ‘Must love hellhounds’ and have been meaning ot get my hands on this series
My Guardian power would be the ability to control static electricity and bend it to my will! Because as it is, I cannot touch anything metal without being shocked!
My Guardian power would be the ability to make myself warm no matter what the temperature is.
I would love to have the ability to control the elements (fire, water, air and earth).
My Guardian power would be to be able to read people’s thoughts. I read almost constantly when I’m not at work, and when I am at work, I have fun people watching. So if you put the two together (in my crazy brain) you get reading thoughts.
I haven’t tried this series yet, but I’d love to start!
my Guardian super power would be the ability to dust or de-lint something with just a wave of my hand cuz i hate dusting and i hate lint on clothes.
Relax… it can’t be the worst book ever. I’m working on that one. ;o)
Guardian super power? Well, this might sound lame, but I want to ability to just ‘blink’ and instantly my house is clean.
Oh, by the way… don’t enter me.
) I’m really good about snagging books as they release.
Haha! I just saw this (sorry, I suck) and I *always* think they are the worst book ever…until I finish it. And then it is my favorite.
