I hate hate HATE running

So, sitting on your behind all day is probably the worst way to stop the inevitable butt spread. I’ve been making myself get to the gym a lot more (also on the urging of my husband, who is a freak and loves exercising), and I’ve always hoped that one day, I would grow out of the the overwhelming hatred of running that I’ve carried since third grade in PE class.

So I’ve done other things. I’ve always been active, so I still get out and do the hiking/walking/running around with my girl thing (chasing your daughter through a park on the threat of monster kisses doesn’t qualify as running.) The natural runner machine, that’s a little bit like a ski machine. I’ve done Pilates. I’ve done the bicycles. When I was 21 I moved from Alaska to Oregon and lost 20 lbs on Tae Bo (I still have fond memories of my sister and I telling Billy Blanks to Eff off.) But running, I still won’t do, even though I dream of one day have the toned, taut, marathon body.

Anyway, last night I was out to dinner with a couple of friends, and I heard that one of them has begun to … Jazzercise. I think we all know what popped into my head.

Now with more cowbell.

Headbands. Thong leotards. Spandex. Leg warmers.

But apparently it’s having a huge comeback … and I’ll admit I’m tempted. Not because I want to jazzercise or exercise or do anything to make myself taut and toned (Where’s my miracle pill?) but I’ve got a conference in July and the writer thighs have got to go! And it is a lot easier to make myself do it when I’m on a schedule with a friend, rather than dragging myself out at 10am, because it’s easiest to go when everyone is at school.

…or I really just want an excuse to get some leg warmers. To cover my thick ankles, if nothing else.

Exercise: Love it, hate it? Love it when you do it but can’t ever find time? And what color of leg warmers did you have?

Exercise – Hate it! I was similar to you with the whole, I HATE running, and will never love running. I could speed walk the mile for gym quicker than I could jog/run it. Now having 3 kids and working full time, I found that 15 mins to myself is theraputic. Do I run often? Nope. But during spring and summer, I do it a couple times a week just to get some me time. And no treadmill for me. Give me trees and fresh air. Last summer I read the book Born to Run. Completely changed my perspective on running. Doesn’t change that I don’t run often, though.

I despise working out. Always have, probably always will. I was always a big fan of the neon pink leg warmers, probably still have some somewhere…

  3. Susan says:

I’ve hated exercising since I was a kid (we won’t even go into the nightmares from then!). But since I’ve found a great women’s only gym (no, not Curves), I’m falling in love with exercising. My gym is AWESOME. I’ve taken a lot of great classes – especially strength training. Plus I am working with a personal trainer, working towards running a half-marathon in 2011.

As for leg warmers, I vote rainbow.

Hate it. I took a Yoga class for several years and I loved it, but when the instructor stopped the class I fell back into the sloth mode.

I had teal and peach striped leg warmers. I was styling back then!

  5. Stormmoth says:

If your tempted by Jazzercise, what about Zumba(I think that’s how you spell it), even just watching the commerical makes you feel like you worked out. Didn’t leg warmers make a bit of fashion comeback recently? The more lurid the neon the better.

I hate exercise, always have, always will. No butts about it! (How’s that for a lousy pun?)

I don’t exercise. *glances down* I probably should huh? As a kid and a teenager, I was an athlete… did multiple sports, so it wasn’t a problem then. Getting motivated now is a huge issue. I take Krav Maga for my exercise. Might as well learn how to stab someone in the ear with my booklight while fleeing from the bad guy. They also have kickboxing and aerobic courses there. I can’t do exercise just for the sake of exercise, I’ve tried. lol. Oh and neon spandex, fyi, is just WRONG.

I hate running but like lifting weights. However, I haven’t done that in a while either. I’ve heard women say they hate working out at the local rec center because they are intimidated by the big burly muscle bound weight lifting guys. I don’t understand that. Those guys don’t bother me. I mean I’m not trying to compete with them (no way in hell I’m benching 200 lbs!). What I hate is the whole dance around trying to get on the machines! You can’t wait too close because then you’re crowding the person but if you’re not close enough then someone else will poach your spot! Just trying to lift weights wore me out.

Never owned leg warmers. I was a deprived child.

  8. Dawn says:

What color legwarmers “did” I have? I still have them! Rose and peach. Ok – the kids play with them (but I still have them – don’t ask about the leotard).

I hate, hate, hate running but I do like Pilates and the nice machines at the gym (where I can read my books while pedalling along).

    Happy Friday!

I hates running! whats the point when there is nothing chasing you? I prefer to go out to the club and dance with a bunch of friends. Only leg warmers I ever owned were leopard print and I was 7 in dance class. ^_^

I’m not athletic at all and def. could lose some weight.

but once a week I go to a kickbox-aerobic class and damn it’s … great! I feel exhausted, but kinda…. good afterwards… it’s damn strenuous and though the instructor is a friend of mine, I have this little urges to strangle her because she doesn’t even sweat properly, while I feel as if death was just around the corner :D

Hate running. Got the Wii Fit to try to lose some weight and due to just recently being diagnosed with diabetes, all the more reason to lose the 60 pounds or so that are hanging on. the Wii has some fun things to do so it isn’t so bad. There is even a running thing, which is a pain in the butt. I did the long route once and about died by the time it was over, chasing the puppy on screen.

  12. Jocelyn says:

I had a pair of leg warmers as a kid – they were dark blue and AWESOME.

I really hate excercising (I do not like to sweat). But! I love to dance. I tried Jazzercize when I was young (around when I had the leg warmers) but I was not coordinated enough to go on with it, I plowed into about three other women the one time I tried. Tragic!

Now I do ballroom dance, and Core Rythms at home where there’s no one to run into when I misstep, and drag myself to the hamster machines at the gym sometimes. I’m never really in shape (especially not right now) but I enjoy the gym enough that I’ve been reasonably fit in the past. Right now, I’m trying to convince myself to start taking Yoga classes again – it feels so good to be that stretched out.

  13. =A says:

Like water aerobics – well, any excuse to get in the water, really. Would love to take a cane fighting class, but can’t find one locally. Mostly too busy running from job to job to class to home to job to exercise.
    Have no leg warmers.
Hate running. Had a neighbor who was a runner – would see him crossing traffic a mile away and homeward bound, streaming sweat and grinning in ecstasy. I don’t get it – but that didn’t keep me from enjoying the scenery when he passed!

  14. should I not admit I still have my leg warmers? two pairs: white ones and black ones. do I still wear them sometimes to slouch around the house? umm, maybe. I did finally teach myself to love running, but not in leg warmers.

I am on a truce with exercise. I am not crazy about it, but I do need to do it. We have a Wii now as of December and I have the Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus and the EA Active. It’s all fun and I get a superb workout in the comfort and privacy of my home. We have a treadmill and recumbent bike that I shoot for getting up early to use. I love walking for miles, but I will not ever ever ever run, unless being chased by something scary or I have to protect my cub, Lady K.
Should I ever run, I’d have to tie down the big bewbs or I’ll give myself a honkin’ big black eye when one or both come bouncin’ betty up and whack me one.

  16. Yala says:

I feel about running like you do. And whoever had that crazy idea it would be better to run indoors where you don’t even have changing scenery to take your mind off the fact you’re running? But as long as I can chase a ball, I’m just fine *G*. I like soccer, even though I can’t play it at all and basketball in school (where the no-touch rules weren’t so strict) was awesome! Now that I’m studying I finally started Tae Kwon Do (Korean martial art) after 2 years of doing nothing and I still like it now, 2 yrs later ;) . I love that you’re always trying to improve the kicks/punches you already know and keep learning new ones and seeing the improvement is one of the motivational things about it. The other one is the screaming ;) . When you hit, you’re supposed to scream – I never had a better stress release *G*
